Septic Air Pump Diffusers

Aeration

Septic systems aerate wastewater by bubbling air through the water. This process is critical in aerobic septic systems, because the bacteria that consumes the waste in the water require oxygen to survive. Without aeration, the aerobic bacteria will die off, and the system will no longer treat wastewater effectively. However, only so much air can escape large bubbles and enter the wastewater.

Diffusers are used to turn the air coming from an air compressor into many small bubbles. Those small bubbles help more oxygen escape the bubble and enter the water. Bacteria then use that oxygen and treat the wastewater.

Diffusers

These are tubes or plates typically constructed with fine mesh to allow for water and oxygen to pass through. The holes are small to ensure that the bacteria can utilize and live off of the tiny bubbles. Over time, the mesh will become darker and clogged with tiny particles. You should consider replacing your diffuser about every three years to prevent a build up and damage to your septic pump.

Types Of Diffusers

Just as there are different applications for aerator pumps, there are a couple types of diffusers to choose from. Coarse diffusers produce larger bubbles that help circulate the wastewater. Fine diffusers produce small bubbles that help dissolve oxygen into the wastewater. However, fine diffusers make it harder on the aerator to move air into the septic tank.
