Septic Air Pumps

Aerobic septic systems are one of the most efficient ways to manage wastewater. Aerobic septic systems break down waste up to 20 times faster than anaerobic, conventional septic systems, and they release water that is up to 98% clear and odorless. In order to release this clear water, the aerobic septic system employs a multistage process. Your septic air pump is the most important component of you aerobic septic system, and it is needed for a critical stage in the wastewater treatment process. Without a properly working septic air pump, your septic system would be rendered useless, and you will not be able to effectively treat your wastewater.

What is a Septic Air Pump?

A septic air pump, also known as an aerator or a compressor, is an apparatus that is responsible for pumping oxygen into your aerobic septic system. These pumps are outside of the septic tank, and they have a set flow rate that allows multiple liters of oxygen to enter the water within your septic system each minute. These pumps serve two main purposes: breaking down waste and sustaining bacteria. The increased levels of oxygen in the water help break down waste into small, manageable particles, making it easier to treat. This oxygen also helps sustain and aid waste eating aerobic bacteria, which depend on oxygen to ferment and respire. Because these bacteria digest effluent, or wastewater, there is less of it being released into the environment. This clear drainage will flow into ponds or drainage fields rather than sewage or harmful effluent.

How Long Does A Septic Aerator Usually Last?

Air pumps typically last between two and three years although they can last longer with a proper rebuild kit. You might need to consider replacing your aerator if the drainage from your aerobic septic system smells and looks like sewage or if your sewage backs up onto your property. These air pumps come in a wide variety of types and sizes and can be used for a multitude of applications, so be sure to do your research when you are in the market for a new septic air pump.
